This still life was designed to evoke the experience of improving one's chess game. 
The subdued backdrop and matching foreground are simple, avoid distraction, assist with focus. The tea and lemon stimulate the mind; the notebook provides an outlet for recording movesets, or transcribing famous games. 
The careful brushwork and understated highlights help maintain tranquility instead of bringing flair or pizazz. 
This is a studio piece, oil on mounted Belgian linen. Framed professionally by the lovely folks at The Frame Store in Culver City.
