This studio painting has roots in a small plein air effort done some years ago at Leadbetter Park, in sunny Santa Barbara. After painting into the sun for a sunset painting, I packed my gear up and turned around, only to see this beautiful moonrise awaiting on the opposite horizon.
I couldn't resist the opportunity. I pulled out my camera, snapped some reference photos, quickly set my pochade box back up and knocked out a little study. This studio piece is a more refined and enlarged version of that study.
